What is an EGD with a PH study?

An EGD with pH study is a diagnostic procedure used to examine the upper digestive tract and measure acid reflux in the esophagus.

The upper digestive tract is the upper part of the digestive system that includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). The esophagus is a muscular tube that carries food and liquids from your mouth to your stomach.

An EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy) involves passing a thin, flexible tube with a camera through the mouth to inspect the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.

A pH study measures how often stomach acid flows back into the esophagus over a period of time.

Together, an EGD with a pH study helps doctors identify structural abnormalities and confirm acid reflux severity to guide treatment.

When is an EGD with PH Study Indicated?

An EGD with pH study is usually indicated when a person has persistent symptoms of acid reflux or upper digestive tract problems that need further evaluation. It is commonly recommended for chronic heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, chronic cough, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or suspected gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

The test may also be used when symptoms do not improve with medication, before anti-reflux surgery, or to assess complications such as esophagitis, Barrett’s esophagus, ulcers, or narrowing of the esophagus.

What Happens During EGD with PH Study?

Before an EGD with pH study, the patient is asked to fast for several hours to keep the stomach empty. Certain medications, especially acid-reducing drugs, may need to be stopped temporarily. The doctor reviews symptoms, medical history, and allergies, and explains the procedure. Patients should arrange transportation home because sedatives used during the procedure can temporarily impair alertness and coordination.

What Happens During EGD with PH Study?

During an EGD with pH study, the patient is usually given a sedative to help them relax and remain comfortable. The doctor gently inserts a thin, flexible endoscope through the mouth and into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum to examine the lining for abnormalities such as inflammation, ulcers, or irritation from acid reflux.

If needed, small tissue samples (biopsies) may be taken for testing. After the examination, a pH monitoring device is placed in the esophagus. This may be a small wireless capsule attached to the esophageal wall or a thin catheter passed through the nose. The device records acid levels over 24–48 hours to detect acid reflux episodes and assess their severity.

What Happens After EGD with PH Study?

After an EGD with pH study, patients are monitored briefly until the sedation wears off. Mild throat soreness, bloating, or drowsiness may occur temporarily. If a pH monitoring catheter or capsule is placed, it continues recording acid levels for 24–48 hours while normal activities and meals are resumed. The recorded data is later analyzed to diagnose reflux and guide further treatment.

What are the Risks and Complications of EGD with PH Study?

Although generally safe, the procedure may cause temporary sore throat, bloating, mild discomfort, or irritation from the pH monitor. Rare complications include bleeding, infection, reaction to sedation, or injury to the esophagus or stomach.
